FSUM - Free command line utility for file multi-checksum generation and verification. It allows to create/verify popular file hashes/checksums: MD2, MD4, MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2(256,384,512), RIPEMD-160, PANAMA, TIGER, CRC-32, ADLER32, and the message digest used in eMule/eDonkey (ed2k) software. Its most common use is checking files for corruption (data integrity checking). A hash/checksum calculation might be performed on data before transferring (downloading/uploading) it from one location to another. Making the same calculation after the transfer (download/upload) and comparing the former and latter results, you can check if the received data is corrupted or not. FSUM notifies about any bad, incorrect, missing file. It is a very fast, easy to use tool. Allows to recurse directories. Works with large size files. Supports .MD5 and .SFV file formats (automatically recognizes the format when verifying). Compatible with md5sum, MD5Summer, Easy MD5 Creator, SFV Checker/Verifier, WinSFV, Win CRC32. I was looking for a program, and still am, that would find the differences between files on a CD and what the operational files on the HD were. I found FSUM wasn't the solution. At least not the way I wanted. I tried
"winmerge", which made the search even more of a
"needle" in the pile. So I have to see if my problem is related to "uncompliant" files obtained after the initial install.

 A very nice program
Despite not having a gui this is pretty easy to use command line program.
I found it to be very fast and efficient but then again I only used it to chech the crc from some files I downloaded not to create a crc list.

fsum review
nothing bad about the app. i just dl'd before i knew how to use it. but i do think it could use a bit of revision to make it a god like open source product.
I would really place more emphasis on the help menu. kinda make a general walk thru as best u can.

Good stuff
Does what it says on the tin.
I'm using it to compare baselines of releases because they won't chip out to pay for proper config management here and it's saving me a lot of trouble.

Checking download integrity
I used FSUM to check the integrity of downloaded ISO images (>600 Mb each)of FreeBSD 6.2.
I am comfortable with CLI, and in a few seconds had the MD5 checksums that I needed.
I did not use FSUM in -c (check mode) although I had checksum files available. These were not in .MD5 (or .SFV) format. Despite some searching on the internet, I was unable to find a specification of these checksum file formats. My best guess is that they match FSUM's output formats.
It would be extremely useful if the readme.txt included information on .MD5 and .SFV file specifications.

Seems to be good.
I had trouble figuring out how to just check the md5sum of a downloaded file. Seems to work good for creating md5sum values.
